This week begins the annual announcement of Nobel Prizes in a variety of fields. The economics Nobel prize will be announced on October 13, 2025 (Columbus Day). By the way, San Francisco, unfortunately, still has not returned the Columbus statue to its place.
Last Year’s Winners
Last year, the prize was given to Acemoglu, Johnson and Robinson.
The prize was given “for studies of how institutions are formed and affect prosperity””.
Who will win in 2025?
As I’ve said before, it’s just too hard to predict anymore so I don’t try. Having said that, the Nobel Committee might award it to someone in international economics or political economics.
Public Opinion on the Potential Winner
1. Clarivate lists some economists, but is virtually always incorrect.
2. I could not find any betting markets for economics.

Our new videos will be available this week, with Eric Maskin’s lecture and his most interesting responses to some of my questions. On November 19, 2025, we will have Jean Tirole visit us live on the USF campus. You are welcome to attend.
